Neuromodulators by a Surgeon

Neuromodulators such as BOTOX and Dysport work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to specific facial muscles, preventing the contractions that cause dynamic wrinkles. The result is smoother skin, a more rested appearance, and in the right hands, subtle enhancements to facial structure — like a chemical brow lift.

Injections are a routine office procedure, but best done by a plastic surgeon who is familiar with the anatomy of the face. While many providers offer these injections, only a select few have the qualifications and training required to perform them effectively and safely. Dr. Rafizadeh personally performs every neuromodulator injection — his surgical experience with facial anatomy produces reliably natural, flattering results.

BOTOX vs. Dysport

Both BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A products that produce equivalent results in experienced hands. The primary practical differences: Dysport has a slightly faster onset (results visible in 24–72 hours vs. 5–7 days for BOTOX) and spreads a bit more widely, which can be advantageous for larger treatment areas like the forehead. BOTOX remains more localized — ideal for precise, targeted areas. Both last 3–4 months on average.

Chemical Brow Lift

One of the most requested applications at Better Plastic Surgery is the chemical brow lift — a technique using Dysport or BOTOX to relax the muscles that pull the brow downward, allowing the frontalis muscle to lift the brow naturally. Dr. Rafizadeh performed a chemical brow lift using Dysport, noting that this procedure involves eliminating specific muscle activity to create a lifting effect. The result is a more open, engaged, and youthful eye area without surgery. You can definitely lower or raise an eyebrow with Botox or Dysport — and it is an excellent option for mild brow descent.

Treatment Areas

Dr. Rafizadeh treats the following areas with neuromodulators: forehead lines, glabellar frown lines (“elevens”), crow’s feet, brow lifting and shaping, lip lines and the lip flip, chin dimpling (peach-pit chin), neck bands (platysmal bands), and masseter reduction for jaw slimming. Neuromodulators are also used off-label for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and migraine prevention.

Neuromodulators vs. Fillers

Neuromodulators and fillers are complementary but fundamentally different treatments. Neuromodulators eliminate muscle function to reduce dynamic wrinkles caused by expression. Fillers add volume to fill static wrinkles, restore facial volume, or enhance features. Many patients benefit from a combination of both — and Dr. Rafizadeh creates a coordinated, individualized plan that respects natural facial anatomy.

Neuromodulators FAQs

What is the difference between BOTOX and Dysport?+

Both are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A products that produce equivalent outcomes in experienced hands. BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) is the industry's most established product, known for precision and localized effect — ideal for targeted areas like the glabellar lines and crow's feet. Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) has a slightly faster onset (24–72 hours vs. 5–7 days for BOTOX) and spreads a bit more widely, which can be advantageous for larger treatment areas like the forehead. Both last 3–4 months. Dr. Rafizadeh recommends the right product based on the areas being treated and each patient's history.

What is a chemical brow lift?+

A chemical brow lift is a specific injection technique using BOTOX or Dysport to relax the muscles that pull the brow downward (primarily the orbicularis oculi and corrugator muscles), allowing the frontalis — the muscle that raises the brow — to act unopposed. The result is a subtle but meaningful lift of the brow position, creating a more open and alert eye area. It is an excellent option for patients with mild brow descent who are not ready for a surgical brow lift, and it can be combined with forehead wrinkle treatment. — Dr. Rafizadeh, betterplasticsurgery.com

Does BOTOX look natural?+

In experienced hands — yes, completely. The “frozen” or overdone BOTOX look that patients fear is almost always the result of incorrect injection technique, too high a dose, or poor anatomical knowledge. Dr. Rafizadeh's surgical training gives him an intimate understanding of how each facial muscle moves and interacts. He uses the minimum effective dose to achieve a refreshed, natural result that preserves normal facial expression.

How long does BOTOX or Dysport last?+

Results from both BOTOX and Dysport typically last 3–4 months. Individual factors such as muscle strength, metabolism, and the areas treated affect duration. Patients who receive regular treatments over time often find the effects last slightly longer as the treated muscles become less active. Dr. Rafizadeh recommends scheduling maintenance treatments when you notice muscle movement returning — before the lines fully re-establish.

What areas can be treated with BOTOX or Dysport?+

Dr. Rafizadeh treats: forehead lines, glabellar frown lines (“elevens”), crow's feet, brow lifting and reshaping (chemical brow lift), lip lines and lip flip, chin dimpling, neck bands (platysmal bands / turkey neck), and masseter reduction for jaw slimming. Off-label uses include hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and migraine prevention.

Can neuromodulators be combined with fillers?+

Yes — and this combination is very common. Neuromodulators and fillers address different aspects of facial aging: neuromodulators relax muscles to eliminate dynamic wrinkles, while fillers restore lost volume and fill static lines. Used together, they create a comprehensive rejuvenation that neither treatment achieves alone. Dr. Rafizadeh evaluates each patient's face and designs a coordinated treatment plan that may include both, respecting the natural anatomy and balance of the face.
